American television producer Peter Engel (June 30, 1936–March 4, 2025) was renowned for his adolescent comedies that aired on TNBC, a former Saturday morning block on NBC that aired instructional programming tailored to teenagers. His other 90s series, including City Guys, California Dreams, and Hang Time, were born out of the TNBC block that he created with the adolescent comedy Saved by the Bell.
Peter Engel: Professional and personal life
After producing NBC shows targeted towards teenagers, Engel transitioned to producing reality TV shows. Last Comic Standing, an NBC reality show, is one of Engel’s television productions.
Engel, who was raised as a Jew, converted to Christianity. He published a book on his life and love stories called I Was Saved by the Bell: Stories That Do Come True.
Engel passed away on March 4, 2025, in Santa Monica, California, at the age of 88.
